Bali March April 2024

19-3-2024; we arrived the 13th of march and took our time to acclimatize. Putu has been here quite a few years working at the barbeque guesthouse. The garden looks nice and the beach with our house are still the same. The local mechanic in Amed is very busy. The main road in Amed has a side walk since a few months. Much better because the busy rd was very narrow. Walked down the road west a bit down the main road.

A nice art piece on a wall and the side road that goes to the beach just west of the barbeque guest house. on this beach we had a ceremony last year.

Amed just off the main rd

Amed massage; back again for our daily massages!

15 March; Bob cutting some working boards for his watercolouring. and some works done.

28 March; 2 local girls selling bracelets to support their school. Local fishermen pushing a big concrete block into the sea. It’s going to be an anker that can have a special fishing boat ankered so they can drop fishing nets from it. A week before a tractor dropped the concrete block off on the beach. Before they started they had a meeting to discuss how to do it and afterwards discussed how it went to create consensus.

29 March; did a short walk of 2 hours with Gede. We started walking at 8 and returned at the starting point at 10. The small tar sealed road was to give the locals better access to the villages on the beach.

The “stairway to heaven” was the access before the road was built.

A local young man who is part of the Amed volleyball team training (running) passed us. After some 10 minutes going up we could see the village of Bias Lantang, Amed is further to the right behind the hill.

The village of Chulik and a few girls from a small village in the hills

After going down towards Chulik we ended up on the outskirts of Chulik village and followed the river mostly on tracks between the ricefields. The ricefields have irrigation water races running to feed them and in one of these we met a local who was washing himself in one of the water races. He was naked and after not exposing himself it was ok to take a photo! Gede putting the thumbs up indicating it was ok to take the photo. In the first photo you can see a house with a blue roof which you can also see in the second track on 7 april further down

A meeting place for the locals in the rice fields.

A few locals building a new extension of their house.

A few “river” crossings

We arrived in Ubud at the Kalyana Ubud Resort on 31 march and took a taxi to Ubud to have a look around. We focused on the Ubud Palace in the centre. (Puri Saren Agung). Very nice and Lindsay took a few nice closeups. Outside on the side street they are building a tower for the King who died a few weeks ago.

The next day Bob walked from Kalyana Ubud Resort to Ubud and walked the Campuhan Ridge walk. The Ridge walk was very disappointing. It was some 3 km, I walked a bit further up the track to see if it would get any better. It didn’t. There are hardly any views because the overgrown bush beside the track obscures any views. The track itself consists of irregular square pavers which means your eyes have to stay focused on the track. Do not do this track, there are much better tracks you can do in rice fields that are pretty close by.

Kalyana begin April. All photos are from around the pool which is a very nice area to relax. Lots of beautiful plants and flowers.

On Tuesday april 2 we hired a taxi and driver for the day and went to lots of places; First to an Art workshop called Semar Kuning, (cooperative) in which the artists hang all their work. Unfortunately, we could not take any photos of artwork. It’s a huge place with hundreds and hundreds of paintings for sale. I found a link in which you can see some of the artwork; https://www.instagram.com/semarkuning1paintings?igsh=NHgyc2NzdXNybHRz

We also visited Pura Taman Ayun temple and our taxidriver explained a lot; here a link to Wikipedia; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pura_Taman_Ayun

We also visited a coffee and tea plantation where they make Luwak coffee; it’s the poop of the Asian Palm Civets! We did buy some! At the end of the tour we could taste all the teas and coffees they make. https://www.theubud.com/luwak-coffee-plantation-ubud/

We also visited the ricefields in Jatiluwih. Bob walked one of the popular tracks. https://jatiluwih.id/

Lindsay took these on the way back from Ubud going to Amed.

7 April second walk with Gede. We started at the same point as last time when we went down towards Chulik but now we went a bit further and then turned back the other way down another ridge on the eastern side towards Amed.

We like eating at Warung Kartika! Especially when Gede is cooking! Gede showing the barracuda we had a few times. His seafood curry is the best!

April 14 we went out for the day with Gede and Wayan the driver. Bob and Gede were dropped off at Kastala and did partially the same walk as in 2019. Wayan and Lindsay went to a jewelry shop and also to the beach at Candidasa

Quite a few little stalls along the track
